Roberto Martinez says Bryan Oviedo deserves all the praise he receives after his first Everton goal.
The Costa Rican was handed a rare start as he deputised for the injured Leighton Baines, turning in a performance the England man would have been proud of with a goal, an assist and a clean sheet.
Oviedo has has to be incredibly patient since arriving at Goodison Park at the start of last season and his start against Stoke was only his second in a blue shirt in the league.
Martinez told evertontv: "It is important in any squad to have players working hard when they are not in the starting eleven and biding their time to show what they can do.
"It was very pleasing to see the level of performance Bryan gave. That is not an accident; it is down to his work, his professionalism.
"You are as good as the squad, so it was pleasing to see that from Bryan - he deserves it."
Everton's 4-0 win over Stoke took them to fourth place in the league after Saturday's games and Martinez explained he was happy with this term's progress, before stressing that the Blues remain a work in progress.
"The position in the league table is pleasing but we are still working towards our potential," he continued.
"We are not there yet but it is important to see performances like today, the football we played and seeing the fans enjoying it. We are pleased with the points we have but this season we probably haven't got the points our performances deserved."
