Wednesday’s national newspapers report on Leighton Baines’ injury after Roberto Martinez yesterday confirmed the defender had fractured his toe against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Daily Star, Daily Mail and the Guardian all feature quotes from the Blues boss who says that it is still too early to determine the exact length of time that the England man will be sidelined for.

Consequently, the Liverpool Echo explores the options available to Martinez at left-back. The Spaniard has told the paper that despite the disappointment of losing Baines, the strength of his squad means that he is in a ‘healthy’ position when injuries occur to players.

The Echo also reports on yesterday’s mini-derby win for Everton Under-18s. Kevin Sheedy’s scholars ran out convincing 3-1 winners against Liverpool at Finch Farm.

Elsewhere, a tabloid newspaper is claiming that Everton are monitoring Portuguese midfielder Joao Aurelio and could be preparing a £2million bid for the CD Nacional man.
