Classic Derbies: Clinical Carsley

@Everton

We kick-off our series of classic Merseyside derby victories with a matchwinning contribution from midfield enforcer Lee Carsley.

Carsley’s second-half winner, buried from 20 yards out, proved enough to decide the home meeting with Liverpool in December 2004.

A strike that helped Everton secure their first win over Liverpool for five years, it put the Toffees 12 points clear of their arch rivals with half of the season remaining.

The Reds clawed back most of that deficit but Everton finished above their Stanley Park neighbours in fourth and, with it, qualified for the following season’s Champions League.

We will be looking back on more classic derby wins over course of the next fortnight, leading into the home meeting with Liverpool on Saturday 23 November.
