Everton posted one of their biggest league victories in recent years in the last home meeting with this Saturday’s opponents Hull City.

The Tigers had failed to win an away Premier League match all season when they visited Goodison Park in March 2010 – and they again returned to Humberside with their tails between their legs after receiving a 5-1 mauling.

Mikel Arteta produced a headline-making display, scoring twice – his first goals since returning from a cruciate ligament injury - to condemn Hull to another damaging defeat. It was one of 20 they suffered in the league that season.

Arteta netted a brace either side of Tom Cairney’s equaliser, Richard Garcia then put through his own net and late strikes from Landon Donovan and Jack Rodwell completed the rout.

The victory margin could have been even greater had Yakubu not missed a first-half penalty.

Donovan’s goal was a fitting way to sign-off from his three-month loan spell at Everton from LA Galaxy. The American, of course, would return two years later for a similar spell.

Everton would go on to finish the campaign in eighth position, just two points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

For Hull, manager Phil Brown got the sack three days after their demoralising defeat at Goodison. Iain Dowie was brought in as a replacement on a short-term contract but he could not prevent the Tigers from relegation back to the Championship after their two-year stay in the top flight.
