Graeme Sharp and a team of Everton in the Community staff visited Runcorn earlier today to assist lifelong fan David McTegart with his gardening.
The 82-year-old had been nominated by his granddaughter Claire for the special treat as part of club partner StubHub’s competition to find an Evertonian deserving of a helping hand from the Blues legend.
The applications flooded in but David – a supporter of the Toffees since the age of three and still a current Goodison Park season ticket holder – stood out as a worthy winner.
After arriving at David’s house, Sharpy cut the lawn while the Everton in the Community staff got to grips with the spades, shovels and rakes in the front garden.
Once the work was completed, it was time for a cup of tea as David and Graeme reminisced about the good old days at Goodison.
“Talking to David, it’s clear that he has supported Everton all his life,” Sharpy said. “He’s a great guy and has been through a tough time with a hip problem but his enthusiasm is fantastic. He is Everton mad – we were drinking out of Everton cups and he was offering us all Everton mints.
“When he walked through the gate, I couldn’t believe he was nearly 83 because he had such a spring in his step.
“As for cutting the lawn, I’m used to doing that," claimed Sharp. 'By the time we left it was looking like Wembley!”
David admitted it came as surprise to welcome the Club’s post-war leading goalscorer into his home.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” he explained. “It’s been a great experience – another one in my life.”
