Leighton Baines’ England chances are the talk of Tuesday’s national newspapers, after it was confirmed yesterday evening that Ashley Cole will miss the World Cup qualifier against Montenegro.

The Everton left-back is set to start at Wembley on Friday evening and the Daily Express says that his inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s team will ‘add more potency to a side already brimming with attacking intent’.

Baines’ performances have been described as ‘consistently impressive’ in the Times, while the Daily Mail have compared his statistics for this season against that of Cole’s. The Blues defender comes out on top in the top passer, top tackler, top scorer, top crosser, most clearances and most creative categories.

Elsewhere, the Daily Express and Daily Telegraph report on the passing of former Everton player Mick Buckley. His death at the age of 59 was announced yesterday evening.

Tuesday’s Independent includes a feature piece on how fans are having a greater influence on the decisions of football clubs. The article makes reference to how Everton’s new crest was determined after a vote by supporters.

Locally, Gerard Deulofeu has told the Liverpool Echo that he will bide his time for a Premier League opportunity. The Spaniard has been utilised mainly from the substitutes’ bench since arriving on loan from Barcelona in the summer.
