Roberto Martinez features heavily in Friday’s papers as the Blues prepare for this weekend’s game against Chelsea.

In the Liverpool Echo, the Spaniard has hailed Saturday’s clash as the ‘start of the season’ with the passing of the transfer deadline ending any uncertainty at Goodison Park.

Leighton Baines was linked with a move away in the transfer window but Martinez has told the Echo that the defender’s form for the club won’t be affected despite Manchester United’s failed bid.

Ross Barkley features in the national newspapers with both the Daily Star and the Daily Mirror reporting that Martinez believes the youngster can reach ‘unseen levels’ after his promising start to the season.

Following Barkley’s progression to the first team, the Daily Express and the Daily Telegraph report on Martinez’s thoughts that England should follow Spain’s lead with the creation of B teams and feeder clubs to aid player development.
