What The Papers Say - 9 September

Monday’s papers continue to focus on the international fixtures, mulling over England’s win against Moldova on Friday and previewing the crunch World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on Tuesday evening.

Having kept a clean sheet in his 20th England appearance against Moldova, Phil Jagielka has told the Liverpool Echo that he now ‘feels part’ of the Three Lions setup.

Also in the Echo, Jagielka has commended the performance of Ross Barkley in Friday’s 2-0 win. The midfielder impressed in his 30 minute outing at Wembley and Jagielka added that his Everton teammate has taken the pressures of international football ‘in his stride’.

England moved to top of Group H with the win over Moldova and Baines – who appeared as a half-time substitute – has explained to the Echo that he is confident that the team can finish the job in the three remaining three qualifiers.

Coverage in the national newspapers is sparse, although the Times makes reference to Barkley and how he has become the fifth teenager to play for England in the last two years and the 19th since 1996. Prior to that there has only been 12 teenage England players in the previous 90 years.
