David Unsworth has today returned to Everton as the Club’s Under-21s assistant manager.

After making over 300 appearances for the Blues in two separate stints as a player, Unsworth is now back as a coach.

The former defender, 39, will assist Alan Stubbs in nurturing the Club’s young players as they seek to break into Roberto Martinez’s first team.

Unsworth, an FA Cup winner in 1995, was himself a product of the Blues' youth system and also played for West Ham, Portsmouth, Ipswich, Sheffield United, Wigan and Burnley before moving into coaching with Preston and then the Blades.

Famed for his uncompromising defensive style and powerful left-foot, Unsworth fills a void created earlier this year when David Weir departed to take the helm at Bramall Lane.

He told evertontv: “It means the world to me this Club. I came through the ranks at Everton and I lost count of how many seasons I spent here.

"Every time you go back to Goodison you're made to feel very welcome. You're never forgotten as a player here and there's not many clubs you can say that about.

"So it's great to be back but I'm here to do a job, I'm here to work and I'm here to pass on anything I can to these young players.

"I'll be working my socks off for Alan Stubbs and the Under-21s - and the Academy as and when I'm needed - and that's a nice feeling.

"It's definitely a case of being back home and it's an absolute honour to be asked.

"It feels like the first day back at school again and I've seen plenty of familiar faces already. To be honest, it feels like I've never been away."
