Monday’s newspapers are laden with gossip as the summer transfer window enters its final day.
Roberto Martinez spoke after the weekend draw at Cardiff about how he was confident Everton would emerge from the window in a ‘stronger’ position – and several names have been mentioned with late switches to Goodison Park.
The Daily Telegraph report that Everton will today make a third bid for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy. The article states that the Latics value the Republic of Ireland international at £15million and the Blues will return with an offer closer to that figure. The same story is covered in the Daily Express.
Another midfielder, Gareth Barry, is said to be close to joining Everton on loan, according to the Daily Mirror. The England man has not featured for Manchester City this season under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
The Daily Mirror also claim that Everton want to take England winger Wilfried Zaha on loan from Manchester United - should Marouane Fellaini move to Old Trafford. The paper also reports that Jesse Lingard is another who could move to Goodison on a temporary basis.
The Telegraph also claims Fellaini could hand in a transfer request to force through a move to the Premier League champions.
Leon Osman’s post-match comments have been carried in the Daily Star, with the Blues midfielder saying that he hopes no players depart Goodison Park before the window shuts at 11pm this evening.
Seamus Coleman has repeated his teammate’s view when speaking to the Liverpool Echo. The full-back explained that Leighton Baines’ performance in the stalemate at Cardiff emphasised why the Club must do all they can to hold on to their best players before the deadline passes later today.
