Everton take on Blackburn Rovers in their third pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday. To get in the mood, we're looking back at some memorable past encounters with the Lancastrians. Today, we revisit a comfortable Goodison Park stroll from September four years ago…
Frenchman Louis Saha was the star of the show as Everton ended a three-year wait for a home win over Blackburn in convincing fashion in September 2009.
Saha, who had been sent off in a 4-0 Europa League victory over AEK Athens four days earlier, made amends by steering Leighton Baines’ whipped free-kick past goalkeeper Paul Robinson to break the deadlock 22 minutes in.
Shortly after the break, the former Manchester United man doubled his and Everton’s tally, meeting Marouane Fellaini’s cross at the back post to powerfully head home from six-yards out.
It was the forward's sixth goal of the season and he would go on to score 15 goals in all competitions in the 2009/10 campaign.
Joseph Yobo bagged a third Everton goal when he stabbed in from a corner just before the hour mark, giving the Blues their second league triumph of the season.
David Moyes’ side would make it three-in-a-row the following week when Saha again found himself on the scoresheet in a 1-0 win away at Portsmouth.
The Toffees later ended the campaign in eighth place, just two points shy of European qualification.
