Everton take on Blackburn Rovers in their third pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday. To get in the mood for the game, we're looking back at some classic encounters with the Lancastrians – starting with this away hammering of the then Premier League champions….
A clinical performance from Joe Royle’s Everton saw them stun Saturday's opponents 3-0 at Ewood Park in March 1996.
The Blues’ netted all three of their goals in the second half with Daniel Amokachi putting the visitors ahead with just under 20 minutes of the fixture remaining.
It came when Duncan Ferguson knocked Andy Hinchcliffe’s corner into the Nigerian’s path before he drove home past Rovers stopper Tim Flowers to give his side the lead.
Russian international Andrei Kanchelskis, a £5million summer signing from Manchester United, doubled the Toffees' lead a few minutes later when, after a swift one-two with Amokachi, he surged into the Rovers penalty area and netted from the tightest of angles.
In the final minute of the match Kanchelskis added another. With the hosts pushing for a late goal, Everton countered after successfully clearing a Rovers corner. A long ball over the top found the speedy winger and he raced into the Blackburn box before lifting the ball over the onrushing Flowers.
Everton would eventually finish the season in sixth position, level on points but ahead of both Blackburn and Tottenham on goal difference.
