Tim Howard says a new level of strength and depth can get the very best out of Everton's players.
The Blues have brought in four signings to date in Roberto Martinez's first summer in charge, adding to a squad which earned widespread plaudits in finishing sixth in the Premier League in 2012/13.
Among those recruits is a new rival for Howard - young Spanish goalkeeper Joel Robles.
But now back at Finch Farm alongside his fellow glovesman, a new defender and additional attacking options, the US international admits he is happy to see increased competition for places.
He told evertontv: "In order to go on and achieve great things as a club, you need to have quality in numbers.
"I think that's part and parcel of football nowadays.
"I don't think anyone's fearful of competition, I don't think there are any issues. You just get on with your job.
"I think if you have anything about you, you know your best is good enough. You put forward the effort and I don't think that has ever been a problem here."
