Everton Ladies striker Toni Duggan scored an injury-time equaliser against Russia on Monday to hand England a Euro 2013 lifeline.

The Lionesses looked set for a second successive defeat and a Group C exit before Duggan stepped off the bench to snatch a 1-1 draw for Hope Powell’s side.

Duggan, who entered the fray shortly after the hour mark, rescued a point with a low, first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Her Everton teammate Jill Scott had struck the post early on in the first half before Russia, the lowest ranked team in the competition, took the lead shortly before the break.

“I’ve been waiting to play my part in the team and thankfully today I could do that," said Duggan afterwards.

“We’ve just got to move on to the game against France because I don’t think we’ve shown what we can do in this tournament. There’s still a lot more to come from the girls.”

England will most likely need to beat table-toppers France in their final group game on Thursday to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Each of the three groups at Euro 2013 consists of four teams, with the top two in each group progressing to the last eight of the competition.

The final two quarter-finalists are made up from the two best third-placed teams.

Meanwhile, Everton midfielder Michelle Hinnigan captained the Great Britain Women’s football side to a 6-2 victory over Mexico last night in the final of the World University Games in Russia.
