Reaction from Everton’s first friendly of pre-season against Austria Vienna features in Monday’s local newspapers.

The Liverpool Echo provide a report on Sunday’s match which ended with a 2-1 victory to the home side.

The Everton correspondent writes that ‘the opening game of new manager Roberto Martinez’s reign was essentially a fitness exercise rather than the grand unveiling of a fine-tuned new-look Blues’. Victor Anichebe is highlighted as the game’s star man.

The Echo also says that Blues boss Martinez wants Belgium international midfielder Marouane Fellaini to stay at Goodison Park and, in the forthcoming season, become a role model for Everton’s talented group of youngsters. Fellaini wore the captain’s armband for the second half yesterday’s friendly against Austria Vienna.

Arouna Kone was announced as Everton’s new number nine for the 2013/14 season on Monday, and the Echo have included an eight-page picture special about previous occupants of the famous Everton shirt.

National newspapers the Daily Star, Daily Mirror and Daily Telegraph say that Everton Ladies and England international midfielder Jill Scott believes that nerves were the main factor in England’s defeat to Spain in their opening Euro 2013 fixture on Friday. An injury time own goal from England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley handed Spain a 3-2 victory. The Lionesses are in action again on Monday evening when they face Russia.

Elsewhere, The Times have carried a story that claims Everton are interested in Benfica and Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
