Graeme Sharp has no doubts that Roberto Martinez is surrounding himself with the right coaching personnel at Everton.

Backroom changes at Goodison Park this week have seen the departures of Steve Round, Chris Woods and Jimmy Lumsden to Manchester United.

Graeme Jones, Inaki Bergara, Kevin Reeves and Richard Evans have subsequently arrived at the Club as manager Roberto Martinez finalised his support team.

All familiar faces to the new manager, Sharp says it was vitally important the Spaniard recruited a trusted set of staff.

“He trusts these people, he’s worked these people for a long time and they built up a relationship,” said Sharp. “Just as David Moyes has masked his staff around him, Roberto Martinez is no different.

“He’s bringing coaches he can trust. That’s not to say anything detrimental about the people who are here [already] - that’s always the case when a manager moves to a new club. They like to bring people who they are accustomed with.

Sharp continued: “He’s got a Spanish goalkeeper coach coming in who will work with Tim Howard. I think there won’t be a problem there.

“He’s got Graeme Jones coming in who has been his right-hand man for a long time so they know each other and how they work.

“There’s also somebody who I played against, the scout Kevin Reeves, who had a fantastic football career so has experience of the English league.

“I have no doubts that Roberto is surrounding himself with the right people.”

With Everton set to ramp up their pre-season work by jetting out for a training camp in Austria next week, Sharp expects the players to make quick adjustments to Martinez’s methods.

“The players will know very quickly what it’s all about,” added Sharp.

“David Moyes drove the players very hard and I think Roberto Martinez will be the exact same. He knows he has got a good squad of players and he wants to improve those players.

“As a coach you are always trying to get something else out of your players so that’s what Martinez and Jones will be looking to do. The players will know they will have to work hard.

“That’s the big thing in football, the players can’t be allowed to switch off and I don’t think Roberto will allow that to happen.

“There is a really professional group at the club, a group of players who want to listen and learn, and I think they will be better off from listening to Roberto Martinez.

“Hopefully we can get off to a good start and have a good season.”
