What The Papers Say - 3 July

Wednesday’s newspapers claim Everton are near to completing the signing of Wigan Athletic striker Arouna Kone.

The Liverpool Echo features quotes from Latics chairman Dave Whelan who says that three clubs have made bids for Kone but expects the Ivory Coast international to join Everton.

Graeme Sharp has been speaking to the Echo about Kone’s credentials. The former Blues striker says that the 29-year-old has pace, is strong and knows where the back of the net is.

The Daily Star, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph also state that Kone is close to moving to Everton, along with his former Wigan teammate Antolin Alcaraz.

Another national paper reports that Roberto Martinez is interested in signing Nathan Dyer from Swansea City. The Blues boss is said to be preparing a £5million bid for the 25-year-old winger.

The Times claims that Everton are tracking midfielder Junior Malanda, who is in dispute with his current club Zulte Waregem. Fulham are also believed to be interested in the Belgium Under-21 international.

Meanwhile, Leighton Baines has been described as an Everton ‘icon’ by Martinez. The Echo report that this endorsement is a clear indication that the Spaniard will fight to keep England international at Goodison Park despite the reported interest from Manchester United.
