Everton are close to landing Wigan Athletic striker Arouna Kone, according to several of Tuesday’s national newspapers.
The Daily Express and the Daily Mail both claim that the Ivory Coast frontman will join the Blues this week.
However, the Daily Mirror and the Times claim that the deal could be delayed as Wigan are demanding the full transfer fee to be paid in advance rather than in instalments.
As well as securing Kone’s services, the Liverpool Echo believe that a deal for centre-back Antolin Alcaraz is also close to being completed. The Paraguay international, 30, is available on a free transfer after his contract at the DW Stadium expired.
Another player with Wigan Athletic connections, Joel Robles, could also be on his way to Goodison Park. The Daily Express report that Roberto Martinez is considering a £600,000 move for the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper who spent the second half of last season on loan with Wigan and played in the Latics’ FA Cup final win at Wembley.
Yesterday’s announcement that coaching trio Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods have left Everton to join David Moyes at Manchester United receives widespread coverage.
The Daily Star say that Moyes’ new club will again approach Everton with a fresh bid for Leighton Baines, with the improved offer said to be in the region of £16million.
Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo report on young defender Matthew Pennington signing his first professional contract with Everton.
