What The Papers Say - 17 June

Monday’s Liverpool Echo claims that FC Twente midfielder Leroy Fer could be set to clinch a move to Goodison Park this summer.

Fer, a target for the Blues in January, is tipped as a possible replacement for Marouane Fellaini should he leave the Club, with the paper suggesting Arsenal lead the chase for the Belgian.

Former skipper Kevin Ratcliffe has told the Echo he would like to see Roberto Martinez strengthen in three key areas during the summer. Ratcliffe also believes Wigan striker Arouna Kone would be a welcome addition at the Club.

Also in the Echo, Kone’s Wigan teammate Shaun Maloney has praised his former manager Martinez and says that Everton's players will enjoy playing under him.

He said: “Any player would love his system and style of football. It gets you up in the morning and excited about playing for him and going into training.”

The newspaper also hails ‘Merseyside’s magnificent seven’ after England Under-20s started their World Cup preparations with a 3-0 win over Uruguay. Everton striker Chris Long – one of five Blues players in the squad – was among the names on the scoresheet. Luke Garbutt, John Stones, John Lundstram and Ross Barkley are also in the squad, as are Liverpool pair Jon Flanagan and Conor Coady.
