Chris Long staked his claim for a starting place in England’s first game of the Under-20s World Cup by scoring in a 3-0 friendly triumph against Uruguay on Sunday evening.
The Young Lions coasted to victory over the South Americans at their training base in Antalya, Turkey as they stepped up their preparations for their opening match of the tournament against Iraq on Sunday (23 June).
Long, a half-time substitute, completed the scoring for England in the final minute with a confident finish following earlier goals from Middlesbrough duo Luke Williams and Adam Reach.
The four other Evertonians in the squad also got 45 minutes each as coach Peter Taylor gave all 21 members of his group important game time.
Luke Garbutt and John Lundstram both started the match before being replaced at the interval when Long, John Stones and Ross Barkley were then introduced.
After facing Iraq, England’s next Group E games are against Chile (Wednesday 26 June) and African champions Egypt (Saturday 29 June).
The knockout phase for the 24-nation competition will then begin on 2 July.
