The back page of Monday’s Liverpool Echo features a report claiming David Weir is set to depart Everton and cut his teeth as a manager by taking up the top job at Sheffield United.

The 43-year-old Scot has been working alongside Alan Stubbs in the Blues’ Under-21s setup but is now ready to take up the challenge of steering the Blades back into the Championship, according to the paper.

The Echo also report on Phil Neville’s weekend announcement that he is to end a 19-year playing career and move into coaching. The 36-year-old has been linked with a return to Manchester United to take up a position within David Moyes’ new-look backroom team.

Also in the Echo, former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall says new boss Roberto Martinez will need to recruit four players to boost the current Blues squad.

Everton coverage in Monday’s national papers is minimal, although the Daily Star report on the Ladies’ convincing 4-1 win at Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The article features quotes from hat-trick hero Toni Duggan on how she hopes her recent performances will attract the interest of national team boss Hope Powell, who is set to name the England squad for this summer’s European Championships shortly.

In the Daily Mirror, Martinez’s name is mentioned in a report which reveals that coaches are deciding to take their badges outside of England because the English scheme is ‘pitted with obstacles’.
