Chairman Bill Kenwright insists exciting times lie ahead for the football club with new manager Roberto Martinez at the helm.

Mr Kenwright presented Everton’s new boss at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon just hours after the Spaniard’s arrival at Goodison Park was confirmed.

He said: “During the last four weeks I have to say I have met some of the finest individuals you could possibly meet in football. The finest of them is sitting next to me now.

“It’s a great relief and joy, and it is seriously exciting that Roberto Martinez has agreed to be the next manager of Everton Football Club.

“Right at the start I said that the fans will play an important part in the choice of the next manager and I’ve listened to the fans for the last four weeks and their voices have come over loud and clear.

“I’m very pleased to say that in the end 90 percent have said ‘look, you got it right last time and we’ll leave it to you’.

“So to the Evertonians – and this is what this appointment is all about – I would say that if you had been at the meetings and the conversations I have had with your new manager you would be as thrilled, excited, buoyed and in awe as I have been.”

Mr Kenwright also promised to back Martinez as much as possible as he strives to push the Club forward.

“The first thing we discussed at the meetings was that we didn't want the standards and positions that David had achieved to slip and we want to build from there,” Kenwright added. “That is the only statement we made to each other.

“We want to take this Club forward - and I've got to play my part in that too.

“I said to Roberto, 'I don't want to be the man that comes here and asks you to get me the Champions League or number one position unless I can support you'. So myself and the board will be doing all we can to support the new manager financially.”
