On the back of their flying start to the campaign, Everton went into a hectic September brimming with confidence.
That took a small dent on the opening day of the month though, as second-half goals from Shane Long and Gareth McAuley inflicted a 2-0 defeat at West Brom, themselves enjoying an eye-catching opening to the 2012/13 campaign.
An international break followed as the 2014 World Cup qualifiers got underway, but the Blues should have been back to winning ways with the visit of Newcastle United for another Monday night run out under the Goodison floodlights.
Poised at 1-1 after Demba Ba had cancelled out a fine early opener from Leighton Baines, two officials failed to spot a close-range effort from Victor Anichebe which clearly crossed the line.
Riled, the Nigerian powered in one which did count three minutes from time, only for Ba to grab his second in the dying moments and earn the Magpies an unlikely and undeserved point.
Far from letting that blow harm them, Everton bounced back with one of their most accomplished performances of the season six days later.
Anichebe was again on the scoresheet to break the deadlock in South Wales as Kevin Mirallas' first Premier League goal and a header from Marouane Fellaini completed a comprehensive 3-0 win at Swansea.
An under-strength Everton crashed out of the Capital One Cup with a disappointing 2-1 loss at Leeds United later that week, but normal service was resumed before the month was out - Nikica Jelavic netting twice as David Moyes' men came from behind to register a 3-1 home win over newly-promoted Southampton.
A fairly routine victory, it was enough to push Everton up to second in the league and earn Moyes the Manager of the Month award for the ninth time in his reign.
