Steve Round says the way David Moyes rallied his troops ahead of the Manchester City game illustrated his managerial qualities.
The Toffees produced a magnificent display at Goodison Park nine days ago, lifting spirits from the low ebb induced by defeat to Wigan the previous week.
Round revealed to evertontv: “It’s for the leaders of the organisation to lift the players, first and foremost, and that starts with the manager - who was absolutely magnificent during the week leading up to the match against Man City.
“He really showed what a top manager he was that week. He led the players and made sure they were picked up.
“We mourned, of course we did, but he picked them up, rattled the cages and said, ‘come on, we’ve got to prove what we’re about at Everton’.”
A key part of Moyes’ message to his players has been to ensure the absolute most is made of the promising start Everton made to this season.
And Round insisted that reaching the Champions League remains the main aim, despite the Blues being considered strong outsiders to make that key step this term.
Round insisted: “We’ve still got an opportunity to finish in the top four. It might be a distant opportunity, but while it is there we have to go for it.
“That’s been our goal all season and we mustn’t give up on it.”
