An Everton youth team has flown out to South Africa to compete in the Future Champions 2013 tournament.

With several youngsters away on international duty, Alan Irvine has taken a team of Under-16s and below to the Under-17s competition in Soweto.

Everton began in Group B with a 1-1 draw against Qatar's AspireAcademy on Monday, with Johannesburg Secondary next up on Tuesday.

With the three-team groups decided, a game against a side from one of the other three mini-leagues follows on Wednesday.

Thursday is a scheduled day-off, giving the young Blues a chance to experience the sights and culture of the surroundings. The Everton party will also be taking a session with local coaches.

The final days see the 12 teams participate in the play-off stages, with every side having five games in total during the week.

Other clubs in the competition include defending champions Clube Atletico Mineiro (Brazil), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), Young Zebras FC (Botswana), Bridge FC (Nigeria), CLub Tijuana (Mexico), K-Stars (Zambia), SAFA Sedibeng, SuperSport United and University of Pretoria (all South Africa).
