Everton discovered their fourth round opponents on Tuesday evening after the Trotters won their third round replay against Sunderland 2-0.

Games between Everton and Bolton were a regular on the fixture sheet up until Wanderers’ relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.

However, you have to go all the way back to the days of Mike Walker and the 1993/94 campaign to find the last time the two clubs did battle in the world's oldest knockout competition.

In a third round tie at Burnden Park, as was then Bolton's home, Paul Rideout's 44th-minute opener was cancelled out by an early second-half leveller from midfielder Mark Patterson. Barry Horne later saw red, but the Blues clung on for a replay - only to suffer a 3-2 defeat and bow out in front of an expectant 34,000-strong home crowd.

Ironically, it was a future Everton captain who played as great a role in the defeat as any, Alan Stubbs notching the 84th-minute equaliser that cancelled out Stuart Barlow's brace and forced the extra-time period in which former Wanderers boss Owen Coyle grabbed the visitors’ winner.

Prior to that Everton suffered FA Cup defeats to Bolton in 1953 and 1935, and you have to go all the way back to a 3-1 third round replay success in 1908 to find the Blues’ last cup success over the Lancastrians.

Everton’s last Premier League visit to the Reebok in November 2011 resulted in a 2-0 triumph with goals coming from Marouane Fellaini and Apostolos Vellios.
