First half goals from Ross Barkley, Anton Forrester and John Lundstram proved in vain as Kashiwa Reysol hit back to condemn Everton to defeat in their second Dallas Cup outing on Monday.
The young Blues went into the game on a high having defeated Brazilian outfit Coritiba in their opening match 24 hours earlier and took the lead just four minutes in as Barkley bagged his second goal of the competition.
Reysol quickly levelled through Masato Tairaku, but efforts from Forrester and Lundstram left Kevin Sheedy's side seemingly cruising at 3-1 up with just 38 minutes played.
Tairaku reduced the deficit almost immediately, however, and then completed his hat-trick on 65 minutes to restore parity once more.
Perhaps exhausted by the previous day's exertions, Everton then conceded a fourth, Syouji Kawashima completing the scoring 19 minutes from time.
The result leaves the Blues third in Group C of the Gordon Jago Super Group ahead of Wednesday's final game against bottom side Club Bolivar.
Sheedy's charges, who currently sit a point behind leaders Reysol and level with Coritiba, will need to defeat the Bolivians to guarantee their progress with only the three group winners and the best runners-up advancing to the semi-finals.
