David Weir has returned to Everton as a coach.

The defender, who made 269 appearances during an eight-year playing spell at Goodison Park, will work with the Club’s Academy and Reserve sides.

Alongside his coaching responsibilities, Weir, 41, will also be eligible to turn out for the Blues’ second string – and did so in Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

With Aristote Nsiala away on loan, Skhodran Mustafi no longer on the books and Shane Duffy nursing an ankle knock, Alan Stubbs was short of centre-halves, meaning Weir pulled on an Everton jersey for the first time since leaving for Rangers in January 2007.

“David’s returning to us in a coaching capacity,” said Blues boss David Moyes. “He will help out Alan Stubbs with the reserves and he will also play in the occasional reserve game to help support some of those younger players coming through.

“It will be good to have him around the place.  He is a great professional and someone all the players at the Club can look up to.

“He did great for us when he was a player here and we are looking forward to being able to work with again as he starts out in his coaching career.”
