Everton fans are not used to seeing their favourite players wearing red – but that’s exactly what the Blues have done to show their support for the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Red for Heart campaign.

In support of the charity’s campaign, which runs throughout February – National Heart Month – members of David Moyes’ side have donned red and are calling for others to join them.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard said: “It’s great to be able to support the British Heart Foundation with their Red for Heart campaign. It is vital that we all do what we can to raise awareness of heart disease and support the BHF in their fight against it. If we can wear a red shirt, then anyone can do it!”

Team mate John Heitinga added: “The BHF does fantastic work in the area and this is one time that I am proud to wear red. I urge as many people in Merseyside to go Red for Heart and support this amazing cause.”

New signings Nikica Jelavic and Darron Gibson also donned the shirts to lend their support to the campaign.

With over 2.7 million people in the UK currently suffering with heart disease, the players are raising awareness to support Red for Heart, the BHF’s fundraising campaign which encourages people across the UK to think about their hearts and raise money to save lives.

Ken Fretwell, BHF fundraising volunteer manager in Merseyside, said: “National Heart Month is an important time for people in Merseyside to think about their own hearts and of those around them. Our Red for Heart campaign is our way of raising money to continue saving lives. Thanks to everyone at Everton Football Club for going Red for Heart to help us to do this.”
