Everton's Fara Williams netted England's first goal of the 2011 Women's World Cup on Monday.

The Three Lions had to settle for a point in their opening match of Group B as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Mexico in Wolfsburg.

A rare headed goal from Williams broke the deadlock after 21 minutes - the Everton midfielder rose high to meet Karen Carney's outswinging corner and hit the net from 20 yards out.

Williams fired a handful of attempts at goal shortly after her opener but Mexico netted the equaliser on 33 minutes. Monica Ocampo's impressive strike from 25-yards dipped past England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and into the top corner to draw her side level.

Eni Aluko and Kelly Smith came close to putting England back in front after the interval but Hope Powell's side couldn't find a way through the Mexican defence.

Everton left-back Rachel Unitt and midfielder Jill Scott also played a full 90-minutes in the game, while goalkeeper Rachel Brown remained on the bench.

England's next match is against New Zealand on Friday 1 July.
