Everton will host Villarreal in a prestigious pre-season friendly at Goodison Park on August 5.
The Friday night fixture will kick-off at 7.45pm and brings the Spanish club back to Goodison for the first time since the qualifying rounds of the Champions League in 2005.
The Blues of course have bittersweet memories of that tie with it being their only experience of Europe’s elite club competition, but also ending in an agonising defeat over the two legs.
Villarreal won many admirers with their football that season and went all the way to the last four where they were narrowly defeated by Arsenal.
They remain one of Spain’s finest teams and will provide top quality opposition for David Moyes’ side on the eve of the Premier League season.
The Yellow Submarine – as they are known because of their luminous yellow strip – are managed by Juan Carlos Garrido and finished an impressive fourth in La Liga last season behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia.
Skipper Marcos Senna and defender Gonzalo Rodriguez are the notable survivors from the class of 2005, but there are plenty of star names who have arrived to replace the likes of Riquelme, Forlan and Sorin.
Former Manchester United man Giuseppe Rossi has flourished into one of La Liga’s most potent strikers, while he is partnered up front by the precociously talented Brazilian international Nilmar.
And with Spanish World Cup players like Carlos Marchena and Joan Capdevila there will be plenty of quality when the men from El Madrigal return to Goodison.
The fixture is the latest pre-season fixture to be confirmed by the Blues following the announcement of games against Bury (July 15), Philadelphia Union (July 20) and DC United (July 23).
Ticket information for the Villarreal match will be posted on evertonfc.com as soon as it becomes available.
