Jags Joy For Johnny

by Rob Urbani @efc_roburbani

Phil Jagielka is delighted to see an Everton player involved in the World Cup semi-finals.

Jags' fellow Blues defender Johnny Heitinga booked his place in the last four courtesy of Holland's dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil in Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon.

The England man has been keeping close tabs on the progress of his teammates in the Rainbow Nation and admits it adds to the drama to have an Evertonian at such an advanced stage of the tournament.

> Heitinga's Holland Progress

Jagielka told evertontv: "Holland normally seem to do something wrong in World Cups but they have some fantastic individuals and they are playing well as a team. It will be hard to pick a winner from the countries remaining but they all have a chance of picking up the trophy.

"It is good to see Johnny still flying the flag (for Everton)."

Heitinga must now wait to see how Ghana and Uruguay fare before knowing who he will face in the semi-finals. Ghana, the last remaining African country in the competition, were victors over the USA.

Jagielka continued: "I was disappointed for America, I was hoping they would get past Ghana but Tim can come back with his head held high - both Tims can in fact - and Steven was unfortunate not to go through."

As for England, Jagielka believes their exit was deserved - such was the quality of their performance in the second round against Germany.

He added: "England lost a few key individuals and a few others didn't perform as we thought they would so we quite rightly got beaten. When it gets to the knock-out it is all about who performs on the day and unfortunately we didn't and Germany did."

As for his own international ambitions, Jagielka insists all he can do to force a return to the international fold is continue to give his all in the royal blue of Everton.

He adds: "I've always said the only way I will be picked by England is by playing well for Everton. I just want to play games because I missed a lot of games last season. I want to start the season as well as I can and wherever it takes me, it takes me."
