Ladies Lose To The Gunners

@Everton

Everton Ladies suffered a 1-0 defeat to title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

It was an extremely close battle at Marine FC in Crosby which saw England international Rachel Yankey net the only goal after just six minutes.

The Gunners held the majority of possession in the first half after a lapse in concentration from the Everton defence allowed Yankey to slot past Rachel Brown and put the visitors ahead six minutes in.

There were plenty of chances for Mo Marley's side to equalise as they continued to pile pressure on the Arsenal back line after half time.

And the introduction of Fara Williams to midfield and allowed for some crafty interchanges in midfield which really put the current league champions under pressure.

The Gunners' frustration started to show in the final third and a challenge from Williams on Arsenal captain Jayne Ludlow provoked an aggressive outburst on the England midfielder and saw the Arsenal captain shown a straight red card.

Everton really turned on the heat from that moment and forced visiting goalkeeper Emma Byrne to make a number of saves.

Striker Natasha Dowie came closest to drawing level with a superb effort - her curling drive looked to have beaten the Arsenal stopper but her fingertip save denied Everton an equaliser. Jill Scott was gifted a follow-up shot as the ball bounced off the woodwork but hit it straight at the keeper.

The match sees Arsenal move within a point of league leaders Leeds Carnegie, while Everton are in fourth spot.

Mo Marley's side are next in action on Wednesday when they travel to Doncaster Rovers Belles for a 7.45pm kick-off.
