Club Tragedy

Goalkeeper Alex Cole, a member of Everton's Under-19 squad from last season, was fatally injured in a road traffic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occured on the M53 motorway in Wirral and Merseyside Police are now appealing for the public's help in order to ascertain what exactly happened.

A statement from the Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses and we are waiting to speak to other people in the vehicle. If anyone has any information, we would ask them to contact us."

The teenager made numerous apperances for the Academy at a variety of levels during his years at Everton and also served as the reserves' substitute goalkeeper on many occasions during the 2002-3 campaign.

Highly regarded by team-mates, coaches and staff members at Everton, he was released by the club at the beginning of last season, but was expected to continue his goalkeeping talent elsewhere.

Everton's Head of Public Relations Ian Ross added: "Everybody at Everton Football Club expresses their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the Alex at this time. It is a tragic loss of a young life."
