Seamus Coleman says he is savouring the chance to learn from “one of the best in history” in Carlo Ancelotti.

Coleman revealed he has been taking notes from the Italian’s training sessions but reiterated his focus is on delivering consistently on the pitch as the defender aims to sustain his excellent form since the Premier League restart.

In a wide-ranging interview with Everton's matchday programme, Blues captain Coleman also discusses his own leadership style. He explains how he has no hesitation in telling players if they are not hitting the standards they are capable off, adding: “It’s because I see so much in them and want them to reach their potential.”

The 31-year-old right-back gained his UEFA B Licence with the Football Association of Ireland at the end of last season and was due to begin studying for his A Licence this summer before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Everton boss Ancelotti has commented Coleman boasts the tactical understanding, professionalism and character to make a successful progression into management.

And the Irishman revealed he has seized the opportunity to enhance his strategic and communication skills by analysing Ancelotti’s methods.

“We are playing for one of the best managers in history and it is a great opportunity to learn from him,” he said.

“I make notes on certain training sessions and situations.

“He might say something to a player, or deal with a situation in a certain way and, sub-consciously, you are logging it.

“The same with his manner around the place and how he handles himself.

“He says the right things at the right times to players.”

Coleman played his 314th Everton game in Monday’s Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur, moving him into the top-30 in the Club’s all-time appearance chart.

The right-back has been an immaculate ambassador for Everton during his 11 years with the Blues and saw his status recognised when he was named as Club captain on the eve of the 2019/20 season.

Coleman’s approachable nature and willingness to offer guidance has been praised by Toffees youngsters Anthony Gordon and Jarrad Branthwaite recently, while Mason Holgate last week described him as a player “who shows what Everton is all about”.

Coleman - who also captains his country - says he strives to help his teammates perform to their best abilities and details how if he may seem to be “on their cases”, it is a reflection of their considerable talents.

“If I have to tell someone to sharpen up, I will,” says Coleman.

“But I want players to understand I am doing things for the right reasons.

“It is because I can see so much in these players.

“I want them to reach their potential – and realise they have massive opportunities.

“The likes Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] and Mason [Holgate] in the past, Jonjoe [Kenny], too, I want the best for them.”
