Season Review - October 06

After the highs of September, October 2006 was where things went a little awry for the Toffees.

It started badly, with the first defeat of the campaign in the shape of a 2-1 reverse at Middlesbrough.

Despite a creditable performance, goals from Mark Viduka and Yakubu put the Blues to the sword.

In the wake of dropped points at home against both Wigan and Manchester City, Everton boss David Moyes kenw his side's decent league placing should have been so much better.

The response was positive. Penalties and Andy Johnson have not made happy bedfellows in 2006 - thanks to a series of controversial refereeing decisions which infuriated Everton's fans.

The suggestion in the media was that comments from rival managers about the player had influenced the judgement of match officials. If that was the case, then this was the game where the comments began.

Neil Warnock was not happy with the penalty that was awarded for a foul on Johnson by Claude Davis. And he made his feelings abundantly clear after a game Everton went on to win 2-0.

Although Everton were awarded four penalties in the Premiership between August and December, only one was for a foul on Johnson - and he was undoubtedly the most fouled Everton player in those months.

Nevertheless, following that victory a 4-0 thumping of Luton in the League Cup continued to boost the side's spirits. The most notable strike of that contest was a late Anichebe effort - his first of the season - underlining his growing credentials.

A 1-1 draw at Arsenal earned courtesy of the ubiquitous Tim Cahill headed strike ensured the month ended well.
