Russia v Portugal 16/06/2004 19:45

Portugal got back on track in front of their own fans in Lisbon, but the result witnessed the end of Russia's hopes of progressing through to the Quarter Finals.

The majority of the 58,000-strong crowd at the Estadio da Luz looked on anxiously after Portugal's opening game defeat to Greece and were far from happy with this performance.

The tournament hosts took an early lead after Deco fired the ball into the area and Porto teammate Maniche swivelled to create space before firing home.

Maniche wheels away in celebration after his opener.

Just before half-time Russian goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov was sent off for handdling outside the area, but despite the extra man advantage, Portugal struggled to kill off the game.

To their credit Russia never gave up, though Luis Figo hit the post and late on substitute Rui Costa added a second, poking home Cristiano Ronaldo's cross.

Portugal now need to beat Spain on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals, however Russia are now eliminated and only have pride to play for against Greece in Faro on Sunday.
