Review of the Year - July 06
The first couple of weeks in July saw David Moyes rebuilding the fitness in his players.
The manager took his players to a training base in Devon so they could focus on regaining the physical shape that would be necessary for the games to come.
The first meaningful action of the pre-season was a concurrent friendly double with Port Vale and Bury.

While both sides recorded victories, it was the first action of Andy Johnson in an Everton shirt that captured the attention of most fans.
Further games against Preston (0-0), and Celtic (0-1) followed before the Blues headed to America.
They recorded draws with Columbus Crew and Club America - but the performances hinted towards the good start to the Premiership campaign that was to come.
While AJ was still to net for the Toffees, there was much to suggest that, along with Joleon Lescott, he would be a valuable asset.
