Marine AFC v Everton U18s
An Everton XI booked their place in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 win at Marine AFC on Thursday evening.
Kevin Sheedy and Duncan Ferguson named a youthful side featuring many first-year scholars with one eye on Monday's Youth Cup tie at Sheffield United.
But Calum Dyson's third-minute opener and George Newell's close-range finish gave the Blues a first-half lead the hosts could not surmount.
A mix-up at the back allowed forward Dyson to coast past goalkeeper Sean Lake and walk the ball into the net in the first attack of the game.
Marine had their first forage forward and nearly pulled things level on eight minutes when Michael Monaghan drilled just wide.
Midway through the half, the Blues doubled their advantage.
Ben McLaughlin, impressing with his added experience at right-back, burst forward and centred low along the six-yard line.
Rushing to meet the ball and finishing firmly was striker George Newell, son of former Toffees player Mike.
It was almost 3-0 shortly after when McLaughlin again burst forward, this time cutting inside to rasp a fierce effort onto the crossbar.
The hosts were to claw a goal back before the break, but not before missing a better chance from 12 yards.
Josh Sumner took the awarded penalty on 39 minutes, but Mateusz Hewelt was equal to his efforts and produced a fine save.
Jonathan Goulding was to beat the young Polish stopper four minutes later, however, when he converted Matty Devine's low cross.
Substitute Karl Noon made an impact on arrival at the break and came close with a driven effort that fizzed wide of the angle.
The attacker would then have the hearts of home fans in their mouths when he gained possession, spotted Hewelt off his line and attempted an audacious chip that bounced back off the bar.
Both sides continued to press for another goal, with Andy Fowler and Oliver Shannon trying their luck for Marine and Everton respectively.
A full-time score of 2-1 puts Everton into the Senior Cup semi-finals, with attention now turning to Youth Cup action on Monday.
