Liverpool Under-18s v Everton Under-18s

The first Merseyside derby of the season turned into a story of two penalties, as Everton Under-18s suffered a narrow 1-0 away defeat on Saturday.

Kevin Sheedy's young Blues struggled to get going in the first half at Liverpool's academy, with the match as feisty as you'd expect from a first-team encounter.

The hosts edged the opening 45 and were handed a penalty which was duly converted on the stroke of half-time.

Midfielder Ryan Ledson led the charge after the break as chances started to fall for the Toffees, despite substitutions resulting in three players under the age of 16 taking to the turf.

Despite continued pressure and openings, Everton were unable to find a way through and even when handed a 92nd-minute penalty, Callum Dyson was unable to take advantage.

After the final whistle, Sheedy said: "We were disappointed with our performance in the first-half. We weren't brave enough to get on the ball, but at the stage it was pretty even. We had a penalty appeal on the stroke of half-time and they went up the other end to score one of their own.

"We were on top for all of the second half and disappointed not to come away with a win, let alone a draw.

"I said to the players that we couldnt have asked for more after the break. They showed great commitment and desire; but we weren't clinical enough.

"We didn't have a derby last year but I believe you need to have it. It means a lot to the players and they know what it's all about, especially the local lads. I enjoyed it; it was a good old-fashioned derby game."
