Everton v Valencia

Everton's third and final game of their USA tour ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Valencia.

The Toffees competed well and created a few chances in a useful exercise in MIami's sweltering Sun Life Stadium but ultimately it was Michel Herrero's second half drive which confined the Blues to a nominal sixth place finish in the eight team American tournament.

Roberto Martinez again opted for four at the back but drafted in some of his youngsters, handing Gerard Deulofeu a first start since he arrived on loan from Barcelona.

Bryan Oviedo sent the first effort of the game wide 13 minutes in after he had cut infield.

Then Valencia came to the fore with a pair of chances for Roberto Ibanez, the first was snuffed out by Joel and the second was a volley just wide.

Deulofeu showed a glimpse of his talent in surging to the byline on 28 minutes but his pull-back was cleared.

Chances began to flow and Aly Cissokho arrowed a left foot drive just wide on the half hour before Everton's best move of the half.

ValenciaFellaini challenges for the ball

Steven Naismith and Oviedo combined down the left and the Costa Rican played in the Scot whose first time shot forced Vicente Guaita into a top save.

Ibanez nodded another presentable opportunity wide before half-time and Martinez made two changes at the interval.

Nilkica Jelavic and Seamus Coleman entered the fray but it was the Spanish side who took the lead when their own sub Herrera lashed in from the edge of the box from Cissokho's pass.

Then another Valencia's replacement, Juan Bernat, brought a fingertip save from Joel on 65 minutes.

The corner came to nothing though, and Everton couldn't capitalise on a very promising counter.

They struggled to create further chances and were dealt a blow when Jelavic limped off with three minutes left.

Arouna Kone came on but there was little chance for him to effect the game.
