Reserves v West Ham

Everton Under-21s suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

The young Blues lost their second successive game in the new format of the reserve league, as the visitors flew out of the blocks at Finch Farm.

So clinical were the Hammers in fact, that they cruised into a 3-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Robert Hall was afforded too much space on the edge of the box and he drilled a low effort beyond Toffees keeper Mateusz Taudul on the four-minute mark.

The London side then saw their advantage doubled when Johan Hammar indavertently turned a cross into his own net unchallenged.

And on 14 minutes came the goal of the game. George Moncur created a yard of space before rifling a left-footed strike into the top corner.

The rapid start was typical of the game's tempo and the Blues started to come into the action more as the half went on.

And with three minutes left before the break, there was still time for a goal at each end.

The away side broke down an Everton build-up on the halfway line and delivered a swift and direct counter.

Blair Turgott provided the finish, running at a backtracking Blues defence before finishing at Taudul's near post.

But moments later, it was the Polak's opposite number who was fishing the ball out of the net - as Shane Duffy rose highest to head home Tyias Browning's centre.

After half time, Everton picked themselves up and started the brighter side.

Chances came for Hallam Hope, John Lundstram and Apostolos Vellios - who saw his strike hit the woodwork.

As the Blues pushed to pull the Hammers back further, they were caught out again on 70 minutes.

A quickly-taken throw-in left the defence exposed and Paul McCallum was waiting at the far post to round off the scoring.

Next up for the Under-21s is a trip to face Arsenal on Monday 3 September.
