Liverpool 1-2 Everton Ladies

Everton Ladies scored two stoppage time goals to come from behind and bag a dramatic Merseyside derby victory at Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Blues found themselves trailing to a Cheryl Foster penalty as they headed into four added minutes at the end of the second half but miraculously emerged victorious thanks to strikes from Gwen Harries and Natasha Dowie.

The smash and grab raid saw Mo Marley's side close the gap on WSL leaders Arsenal to five points and strengthen their grip on second with four games to go.

The victory was a fine reward for a dogged performance on an evening when the Blues never let their heads - or workrate - drop after falling behind to Foster's cooly converted spot-kick.

Indeed, Marley's side had already hit the woodwork through Fara Williams when the ball struck an Everton hand in the box, giving the referee little choice but to award the hosts their chance to go in front.

Behind and battling torrential rain, Everton's response was to launch forward again and Toni Duggan was unfortunate to be denied by Nicky Davies after dancing through the Liverpool rearguard.

Goalkeeper Davies then produced a fine double save to deny first Williams and then Dowie, but Everton - 2-0 winners the last time these two sides met - always seemed certain to level.

And, as the clock ticked past 90 minutes, they got the break they so richly deserved, substitute Harries alert and perfectly placed to slot home a teasing cross from Dowie.

Not content with a last-ditch point, Dowie burst forward again from the kick off and provided the perfect finale - dinking a lob over Davies from a tightening angle to secure a memorable derby success.

“I was due a goal,” admitted the matchwinner afterwards. “It was great to score, but the points are more important as we want to finish second.

"Even when we were losing 1-0 near the end we kept believing we could turn it around. We felt our performance got what it deserved.”

Everton's next game is against Doncaster Rovers Belles at Marine FC on Sunday, September 2. Kick off 2pm.
