Rodwell 34 , Saha 60
Etihad Stadium | 14th July 2010 10:30
Everton's pre-season march continued after a straightforward 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart.
Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha were the goalscorers, with the Frenchman also missing an early penalty at the Etihad Stadium.
The Toffees were pretty much always in control in Melbourne and David Moyes was able to hand a first taste of Everton action to Jermaine Beckford and Joao Silva.
The game was also Tim Cahill's last before his long-awaited summer break, the Aussie hero playing the second 45 minutes as captain.
The Blues squandered a penalty in the second minute after Seamus Coleman had been bundled over by Rutger Worm in the box but Saha put the spot-kick wide of the right hand post.
Coleman was in the action again in the ninth minute, picking up an excellent Victor Anichebe pass and setting up Leon Osman. The skipper for the night misfired but the ball fell to Magaye Gueye whose shot had the sting taken out of it by a Heart defender.
Gueye fouled Josip Skoko not long after as Melbourne ventured forward for the first time, but Gerald Sibon's free-kick was fielded well by Iain Turner.
Sibon was in again not long after but after rounding Turner he sliced his shot wide from a narrow angle.
The Dutchman was proving the focal point of the Heart attack and soon he lashed a left-footer wide from distance.
But it was ex-Wigan man Skoko who had the best effort, sending a left-footed volley goalwards before Turner turned it over the bar just after the half hour.
And just moments later Coleman burst forward again and served up an excellent cross for Rodwell to turn home the opener.
He couldn't repeat the feat with a long range free kick before half time but the Toffees went into the break ahead.
Anichebe shot powerfully at Clint Bolton who saved with his legs in the 53rd minute and then Michael Marrone went wide from distance for the Heart.
The lead was doubled on the hour when Saha picked his spot from the edge of the box and fired delightfully home for the second goal.
Straight afterwards Saha and Osman headed off, with Joao Silva and Jermaine Beckford both entering the fray for first appearances in Blue.
And the ex-Leeds man almost made a fabulous start as he turned and fired at goal only for the effort to fly just wide.
The second half slowed right down after a succession of substitutions but it required a brilliant save from Turner late on to deny Eli Babalj and keep Everton's clean sheet intact.
