Everton v Carlisle

Everton booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a late win over plucky Carlisle United.

The League One side were very much the equal of Everton for much of the game and Kevan Hurst's deflection quickly equalised James Vaughan's well-taken opener.

The striker got 85 valuable minutes under his belt and Phil Neville also completed a 90 minute runout but it took until the final ten minutes for Tim Cahill to secure the win, popping up in the box in typical fashion and scoring at the second attempt.

And there was just time at the end for Leighton Baines to convert a penalty after sub Kieran Agard was felled in the box.

Carlisle's Adam Clayton had volleyed wide from 20 yards early on but the on-loan Manchester City man was soon to the fore when Vaughan capitalised on his woeful backpass and expertly rounded keeper Adam Collin before rolling home the opener after 11 minutes.

The Cumbrians didn't buckle and instead pressed for an equaliser, which arrived seven minutes later.

Clayton made amends, collecting Vincent Pericard's flick and firing past Tim Howard with the aid of a touch from teammate Hurst that helped it past Leighton Baines on the line.

The busy Vaughan was flagged for offside after slamming home the rebound from Cahill's saved shot 24 minutes in, then the striker flashed a header wide from Baines's whipped cross.

Marouane Fellaini drilled an effort straight at Collin after 33 minutes but the League One side were certainly holding their own.

And goalscorer Hurst warmed the hands of Howard early in the second half before Everton applied some pressure and Fellaini's 58th minute effort was blocked.

The Belgian was even closer a minute or so later when Collin saved well but then visiting skipper Danny Livesey thundered a volley off the bar with 20 minutes left - Howard was beaten but gathered the rebound.

A couple of penalty shouts ensued before Pienaar's shot was deflected wide and David Moyes switched Tony Hibbert for Seamus Coleman.

The full-back had only been on a couple of minutes when he provided the cross that Cahill despatched at the second attempt with nine minutes left to play.

Pienaar could have extended the lead at the death but then substitute Agard. on for Vaughan, was felled by Collin and Baines added Everton's third from the spot.
