FC Sion 1 Everton 0
Everton have lost their first pre-season friendly 1-0 to Swiss side FC Sion.
Midfielder Didier Crettenand scored the only goal of the game just before the hour, as the Toffees unable to call upon a host of big names through injury.
Tim Howard and the club's African contingent are yet to return from their summer breaks.
The Swiss outfit had the better of the opening exchanges, but were often forced to shoot from distance as Everton's relatively experienced defence held firm.
One moment of worry did ensue when Iain Turner's attempted clearance was charged down - but the ball ballooned safely over the bar.
There was commotion in the Everton box following a corner, but moments later the Toffees fashioned their first real chance.
On 27 minutes, Andy van der Meyde squared the ball to Jose Baxter on the edge of the box, but the 16-year old's effort was way over.
Sion began the second half as they had the first, and went close to taking the lead when Virgile Reset's deflected shot hit the bar.
From the resultant corner sub and Nigerian international Obina Nwaneri headed the ball into the ground and over the bar.
Sion took the lead in the 58th minute when Crettenand played a neat one-two that opened the Blues' defence and then calmly finished past Turner.
Everton's own half time sub Kieran Agard should have restored parity straight away but his head glanced wide.
Then Phil Neville had a long ranger parried and van der Meyde couldn't salvage the rebound.
The Blues struggled to create opportunities, perhaps lacking in match fitness, but Jack Rodwell did provide one energetic burst that was halted by the linesman's flag.
In injury time Eunan O'Kane scuffed a shot wide.
