Everton v PSV Eindhoven

Everton have completed their pre-season preparations with a draw against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Mikel Arteta, donning his new number 10 shirt, was the man who earned the draw with a calm penalty kick six minutes from the end after the visitors had taken the lead midway through the opening half.

But this was an afternoon when Goodison got its first glimpse of a number of promising youngsters.

Two 16-year-olds were on the field at the final whistle - Jose Baxter and James Wallace.

The match had started with fellow teenagers Jack Rodwell and Dan GOsling getting their first starts on home soil.

And there was also a chance for big hitman Lukas Jutkiewicz to get a taste of senior action.

Yakubu powered through in the second minute after a fortunate ricochet put the ball at his feet but his left-foot effort was saved by the foot of Andreas Isaksson.

It was a bright start from the home side, with Yakubu looking dangerous. Dan Gosling, included in the starting line-up wide in midfield, also fired wide on 13 minutes as Everton maintained a firm grip on proceedings.

But despite Everton showing nice touches and looking particularly incisive down the right flank, it was the visitors who took the lead 13 minutes before the interval. Midfielder Nordin Amranat with a fierce left-footed drive from the right edge of the box that left Howard with no chance.

In front of a somewhat subdued home crowd, Jack Rodwell gave them cause for a moment of excitement when a firm header from a Mikel Arteta centre was acrobatically tipped over the crossbar by Isaksson.

That came during a two minute spell in which Everton won a flurry of corners, shortly before the interval. But none could provide an equaliser.

After the break the manager introduced Joleon Lescott, withdrawing Gosling after his eye-catching 45 minute display.

It made for an interesting tactical switch, with Lescott replacing Jagielka in the heart of defence, allowing his fellow England international to step into midfield. He positioned himself alongside youngster Rodwell. But it was the teenager who remained in the deeper lying midfield spot occupied for much of last term by Lee Carsley.

Rodwell was withdrawn midway through the half, shortly after Danny Koevermans had missed a glorious chance to double the visitors' advantage.

But there was soon another young hot-shot to have a closer look at, in the shape of Jose Baxter. It was the 16-year-old's first senior run-out at Goodison. That could also be said of young striker Lukas Jutkiewicz, who was given 25 minutes to show his credentials.

Jutkiewicz almost did just that 15 minutes from time, but his low shot from a neat Yakubu drag back was bravely blocked. But it provided hope for the Blues as they chased an equaliser.

The Nigerian international then fired narrowly wide himself as Everton got closer to the goal the crowd craved.

Indeed, the will of the crowd was apparent every time the ball went near Baxter, such is the mood of anticipation surrounding the 16-year-old. But, on this occasion at least, he didn't have a chance to reproduce the kind of magic that provided a memorable goal at Nottingham Forest earlier in pre-season.

In the final stages David Moyes introduced another 16-year-old - this time promising midfielder James Wallace as the average age of the side on the pitch dropped even further.

And with six minutes left on the clock the Blues had the chance to level it when substitute Stijn Wuytens hacked down Joseph Yobo.

Mikel Arteta made no mistake, although Isaksson guessed the right way.
