Everton 1-0 Liverpool
An unlikely hero saw Everton defeat Liverpool in a fairy-tale of an FA Cup replay.
Teenager Dan Gosling popped up with two minutes of injury time left to hand Everton a win over fierce Merseyside rivals Liverpool that their efforts at Goodison Park richly deserved.
For all the discussion about the Toffees' tactics in the initial tie at Anfield, this was a display full of confidence in attack and composure on the ball.
Chances weren't plentiful in the opening stages, but Everton increased their stranglehold on the game following the injury to Steven Gerrard and the sending off of Lucas.
And they totally dominated the extra time period that culminated in Gosling's composed strike.
Lucas sees red for Liverpool
The first threat to Tim Howard's goal came in the seventh minute when an angled drive from the right-hand side by Xabi Alonso went a yard or two wide.
Compatriot Albert Riera's effort from a similar angle on the left dribbled harmlessly wide shortly afterwards.
After 15 minutes Steven Gerrard was forced off through injury and Yossi Benayoun replaced him, much to the delight of the Everton fans. His departure seemed to boost Everton who enjoyed the better of the play following that incident.
There wasn't much in terms of goalmouth action, but moments later Tim Cahill was shown a yellow card after an untidy aerial challenge with Jamie Carragher that infuriated the Liverpool players.
That didn't affect the Aussie though, and he soon created a decent chance for Leon Osman. Cahill's flick-on was volleyed over by Osman from the edge of the box while in space.
Steven Gerrard limps off early onThe makeshift striker was soon to the fore again when a frantic period of play with saw him with the ball at his feet - back to goal - on the edge of the six yard box.
Surrounded by Liverpool defenders, he was unable to get a shot away.
There was a blow for Steven Pienaar before half time though, the South African picking up a yellow card and a one-match ban for a foul on Lucas.
And there was further disappointment after the break when Marouane Fellaini came off with an injury, allowing Gosling an extended taste of derby action. If only he knew what was to follow.
It didn't seem to matter to the Toffees as they had the better of the opening exchanges in the second period, even if Cahill's ambitious 55th minute volley was well wide.
Marouane Fellaini and Phil Neville discuss a decision with the refereeJack Rodwell was introduced on the hour mark, replacing Steven Pienaar and the 17-year-old impressed in the centre of midfield. The move saw Arteta switch to a more advanced midfield position, but it was Liverpool who threatened and Tim Howard had to dash out of his goal to deny Riera.
Things opened up for Gosling midway through the half but the shot - on his weaker left foot - was tame.
But Everton were soon to carve out a magnificent opportunity. When Cahill directed a Mikel Arteta pass into the path of the onrushing Osman, the midfielder's shot crashed against the post from the right hand angle of the six-yard box.

And so David Moyes' side already had the upper hand when Lucas was sent off for a second yellow card after a wild swipe at Lescott with fifteen minutes still left.
Liverpool quickly sent on Javier Mascherano to boost the midfield, withdrawing Riera.
Despite continued possession the Blues were finding chances hard to find, faced by a compact visiting defensive unit. Rodwell's long range effort was the best Everton could muster before 90 minutes were up.
In the first move of extra time Baines fired a dangerous ball across Pepe Reina's six yard box and Osman then drew a save from the Spaniard with a low shot after a neat turn.
And when the same player's shot was spilled, Reina did well to snuff out Gosling's follow-up.
From the corner, Cahill glanced a header just wide and moments before the second interval Arteta rifled in a free kick that was deflected narrowly wide. Only one team was going to win this before the lottery of penalties.
Moyes took the chance to throw on Andy van der Meyde for a rare outing as the second period began.
Gosling had another long range shot before his composure in the box allowed him to sidefoot past Reina, courtesy of a slight deflection. Just two minutes remained on the clock and Goodison went wild.
