An Everton reserve XI have lost 2-1 at Vauxhall Motors.
The hosts lined up with former Everton youngsters Sean Lake and Brian Moogan in their ranks.
Everton went behind early in the second period but Steven Morrison scored for the second game in succession to level it up.
But the Toffees lost out to a 90th minute goal from Gary Martindale.
Everton looked by far the more comfortable side in the first period, showing some neat attacking combinations at times.
Mark Hughes went close from a corner early on, and there were also a pair of headed opportunities for Bjarni Vidarsson.
Morrison and central midfield partner Scott Phelan also threatened from distance.
New boy Scott Spencer had the best opportunity when he latched onto a Vidarsson pass, only to power his effort into the side netting.
Vauxhall took the lead on 55 minutes.
A shot from the right hand angle of the penalty area was parried by John Ruddy, but sub Anthony Wright was able to despatch the rebound.
The Blues might have had a penalty before scoring their equaliser.
But after the handball claim was denied, Morrison diverted a Stephen Connor centre into the back of the net just after the hour mark.
As the second period progressed, the quality decreased and chances were few and far between.
Vauxhall managed a couple of efforts but Ruddy's goal was never really in danger until the late winner.
At the other end John Irving's drive was saved by replacement keeper Tim Dittmer with eight minutes left.
Indeed, Vauxhall's later goal was a fortunate one. Gary Martindale didn't know much about it as he was the beneficiary of some pinball in the Everton six-yard box.
