Portugal v England 24/06/2004 19:45
England were knocked out of EURO 2004 at the Quarter Final stage after Portugal won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 6 - 5.
Michael Owen gave England the lead after only two and a half minutes. Costinha tried to deal with a long ball but his back header fell to the England striker who, with his back to goal, turned and flicked the ball past Ricardo from close range.
England suffered disappointment on 28 minutes when their top-scorer Wayne Rooney was forced to come off. The Everton striker immediately went for an X-ray on an injured right ankle.
Rooney's absence soon showed as the Portuguese pinned a tired England side back in their own half for the majority of the match and got their reward in the 83rd minute when Tottenham Hotspur's Helder Postiga headed home the equaliser for the hosts.

With one minute of normal time remaining Sol Campbell thought he had booked his side a place in the Semi-Finals. But Swiss referee Urs Meier disallowed his header due to an apparent foul on the Portugal keeper.
The first half of extra-time passed without incident but the second period was in stark contrast. Rui Costa scored what looked to be the winner after five minutes when his shot from the edge of the box hit the underside of the bar and flew into the back of the net.
But England battled back bravely and after 115 minutes Frank Lampard equalised. John Terry won a header from a Beckham corner and found Lampard, who swivelled and struck a right-footed shot past Ricardo from close range.
The game remained level at full time which meant a tense penalty shoot-out. Beckham and Rui Costa both missed their spot-kicks to take the tie to sudden death. Darius Vassell missed England's sixth penalty before Portuguese keeper Ricardo scored the winner to break English hearts.
